肯尼亚警方否认逮捕两名英国恐怖嫌疑人
Kenyan police on Wednesday dismissed the British government claims that two of its nationals were arrested in the coastal region of Mombasa after being found in possession of hand grenades.
"The reports are mere speculations. I have not received any reports about the arrest of British nationals in the whole of Mombasa County. We do not have any British suspects in our police custody," Mombasa Police Commander Robert KiturKitur told Xinhua on telephone.
Western media had quoted the Foreign Office as saying it is investigating the reported arrest. But the office has been unable to confirm it.
According to those reports, a spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said British authorities are looking into the issue and are ready to offer any consular assistance.
"We are looking into reports of two British nationals detained in Kenya. We stand ready to offer consular assistance," the spokesperson was quoted as saying.
The reports were sensitive after a group of terrorists stormed an upscale shopping mall in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, killing at least 67 people and injuring 175 others.
