(一) 词意。对词意的理解牵涉到很多问题。在某些具体场合,有的普通词语会有特殊含义,词意不好掌握,如“‘洋插队’杭州创业记”中的“插队”和下文中的“特产”。
翻译这类词语如不作推敲,势必要误解并导致误译。
原文:秋蝉的衰弱的残声,更是北国的特产。
译文1 :The chirping of cicadas in autumn , feeble and lingering , is another specialty of North China. [3 ] (P19)
译文2 : The sporadic feeble chirping of cicadas is especially characteristic of autumn in theNorth. [4] (P1210)
译文3 :The feeble chirp of cicadas in autumn is still a special product of the north. [5 ] (P1328)
程镇球指出:汉英翻译中,译文受原文字面影响的问题较多。[6 ] (P1230 - 232) 如何理解“特产”
成了翻译本句的关键。所谓“特产”是指“某地或某国特有的或特别著名的产品”,用
英语表达则是special local product ; speciality ; specialty。[7 ] (P11875) 但是,“特产”在这里是暗语,其内涵意义不是“产品”,理解作“特色”较为恰当。译文1、3 把“特产”译成了specialty ,special product ,似因理解不当而出现的误译。译文2 较好地处理了这个问题。试改译原文如下:
The chirping of cicadas , feeble and fading , is a special characteristic of autumn in the north.
